What are the uses of UG Seminar
Dear Friends,
At JIPMER, we have started a BLOG spot for helping undergraduates medical students study the subject of community medicine. Through this medium UG students can access resources to prepare for self reading, seminars etc. http://jippsm.blogspot.com
A) What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of "student seminar" as a teaching method?
b) How could you evaluate the BLOG method of learning?

Dear Ajay,
Your comment brings out two important points - one is on accepting a new idea and hte other is on giving feedback.
Whenever a new idea, which is contrary to popular belief, is mooted people would often ridicule the person. No one believed that the world was round or the earth went round the sun when the ideas were first mooted. Infact they were ridiculed. No one believed that one day we could run cars on water. We are almost there. In scientific forum one has to be open to new ideas - however ridiculous they may seem. This is true even for art. Van Gogh was called a mad man. He become great much after his death. Acceptance of a new idea goes through the steps of awareness, interest, trail, evaluation, adoption. (HE Principles)
Giving negative feedback is akin to doing a PR. Most will perform it using Vaseline. Some good physicians would use kind words also and allay the fear. However there would be some who do not use the Vaseline as it was out of stock and few would use amruthanjan instead - after all that is also Vaseline based. Hopefully one should not fall into the last category. The skill of giving negative feedback needs to be developed. So a "stupid" idea should be reworded as "Good, But I think there would be problems such as..." or "Your ideas seem to be futuristic. Lets see if developments do take place.. "

Read this article on Markov Chains. Note the last comment the author makes on its utility.
